Word today of a metal detectorist in the Dutch city of Maastricht discovering an important cache of Celtic gold and silver coins in a cornfield.
According to reports, the trove had 39 gold and 70 silver coins dating from the mid-1st Century BC. The coins may have been hidden originally for safety as troops under Julius Caesar campaigned against Celtic tribes in that area as part of Rome's westward expansion.
The coins were minted by the Celtic Eburones tribe, which Caesar claimed in 53 BC to have wiped out after they led a surprise attach that killed 6,000 Romans.
The coin cache have been preliminarly valued at roughly $225,000.
