One of the most important bronze antiquities ever to come on the market smashed records in New York today. The famed "Artemis and the Stag" bronze, controversially deaccessioned by the Albright Know Art Gallery in Buffalo, NY, blew by its Sotheby's pre-sale estimate of $5-7M before settling at $28.6M when the hammer fell.
The purchaser was Giuseppe Eskenazi who was bidding for an undisclosed European private collector.
The Artemis now holds the world record not only for the most expensive antiquity ever sold at auction, but also the most expensive sculpture of any type at auction.
