A gorgeous garnet and gold pendant believed to be around 1,500 years old has been found in Leicestershire.
Experts say the shield-shaped gem, just over 2cm long and held in place by a collar and backplate of gold, is a piece of Anglo-Saxon history.
They said it is one of the county's finest-ever Saxon finds, and it was unearthed by an amateur metal detector near the village of Sapcote, near Hinckley, on a miserable December afternoon last year.
It is only now that the county's archaeological team has released details of the pendant, after an inquest in Leicester yesterday declared it treasure trove.
It is currently in the British Museum in London, awaiting valuation. The shining gem discovered by 31-year-old Paul Devenyi could be worth several thousand pounds.
